Leviticus 26
Keep My Sabbaths and Reverence My Sanctuary
“You shall not make idols for yourselves, nor set up a carved image or a pillar for yourselves, nor place a figured stone in your land to bow down to it, for I am the LORD your God. You shall keep my Sabbaths and reverence my sanctuary. I am the LORD.
If You Walk in My Statutes
If you walk in my statutes and keep my commandments and do them, I will give your rains in their season, the land will give its produce, and the trees of the field will give their fruit. Your threshing will reach to the grape harvest, and the grape harvest will reach to the sowing. You will eat your bread to the full and dwell securely in your land. I will give peace in the land, and you will lie down with no one making you afraid. I will remove harmful animals from the land, and the sword will not pass through your land. You will pursue your enemies, and they will fall before you by the sword. Five of you will pursue a hundred, and a hundred of you will pursue ten thousand, and your enemies will fall before you by the sword.
I will turn toward you and make you fruitful and multiply you, and I will establish my covenant with you. You will eat old produce long stored, and you will clear out the old because of the new. I will set my dwelling place among you, and I will not reject you. I will walk among you and be your God, and you will be my people. I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt so that you would no longer be their slaves. I broke the bars of your yoke and made you walk upright.
If You Will Not Listen
But if you will not listen to me and will not do all these commandments, if you reject my statutes and if you abhor my ordinances, so that you do not do all my commandments and so break my covenant, then I will do this to you: I will appoint sudden terror over you, wasting disease and fever that consume the eyes and make life waste away. You will sow your seed in vain, for your enemies will eat it. I will set my face against you, and you will be struck down before your enemies. Those who hate you will rule over you, and you will flee when no one pursues you.
If after all this you still will not listen to me, I will discipline you sevenfold for your sins. I will break the pride of your strength. I will make your heavens like iron and your land like bronze. Your strength will be spent in vain, for your land will not give its produce, and the trees of the land will not give their fruit.
If You Continue in Opposition
If you walk in opposition to me and will not listen to me, I will multiply your blows sevenfold according to your sins. I will send wild animals among you, and they will bereave you of children, destroy your livestock, and make you few, so that your roads become desolate.
If through these things you will not be corrected by me but continue to walk in opposition to me, then I also will walk in opposition to you, and I myself will strike you sevenfold for your sins. I will bring a sword against you that executes the vengeance of the covenant. When you gather into your cities, I will send pestilence among you, and you will be given into the hand of the enemy. When I break your staff of bread, ten women will bake your bread in one oven and return your bread by weight. You will eat but not be satisfied.
If in spite of this you will not listen to me but continue to walk in opposition to me, then I will walk in furious opposition to you, and I myself will discipline you sevenfold for your sins. You will eat the flesh of your sons, and you will eat the flesh of your daughters. I will destroy your high places, cut down your incense altars, and place your corpses upon the corpses of your idols, and I will abhor you. I will make your cities a ruin and your sanctuaries desolate, and I will not smell the pleasing aroma of your offerings. I myself will make the land desolate, and your enemies who settle in it will be appalled at it. I will scatter you among the nations and draw out the sword after you. Your land will become a desolation, and your cities will become ruins.
The Land Will Enjoy Its Sabbaths
Then the land will enjoy its Sabbaths all the days it lies desolate while you are in the land of your enemies. Then the land will rest and enjoy its Sabbaths. All the days it lies desolate it will have the rest it did not have during your Sabbaths when you lived upon it.
As for those of you who remain, I will bring faintness into their hearts in the lands of their enemies. The sound of a windblown leaf will pursue them. They will flee as one flees from the sword, and they will fall when no one pursues. They will stumble over one another as though fleeing before the sword, though no one pursues. You will have no strength to stand before your enemies. You will perish among the nations, and the land of your enemies will consume you. Those of you who remain will waste away in their guilt in the lands of your enemies, and because of the guilt of their ancestors with them they will waste away.
I Will Remember the Covenant
But if they confess their guilt and the guilt of their ancestors—their unfaithfulness by which they acted unfaithfully against me, and also that they walked in opposition to me, so that I also walked in opposition to them and brought them into the land of their enemies—if then their uncircumcised heart is humbled and they accept the punishment of their guilt, then I will remember my covenant with Jacob, and I will also remember my covenant with Isaac and my covenant with Abraham, and I will remember the land.
The land will be abandoned by them and will enjoy its Sabbaths while it lies desolate without them. They will accept the punishment of their guilt because they rejected my ordinances and abhorred my statutes. Yet even then, while they are in the land of their enemies, I will not reject them or abhor them so as to destroy them completely and break my covenant with them, for I am the LORD their God. For their sake I will remember the covenant with their ancestors, whom I brought out of the land of Egypt in the sight of the nations so that I might be their God. I am the LORD.”
These are the statutes, ordinances, and instructions that the LORD established between the LORD and the Israelites on Mount Sinai by the hand of Moses.
