Joshua 13
Much Land Remains
Joshua was old, advanced in days. The LORD said to him, “You are old, advanced in days, and very much land remains to possess. This is the land that remains: all the regions of the Philistines and all the Geshurites, from the Shihor that is east of Egypt northward to the border of Ekron, which is counted as Canaanite; the five rulers of the Philistines—the Gazite, the Ashdodite, the Ashkelonite, the Gittite, and the Ekronite—and the Avvim in the south; all the land of the Canaanites, and Mearah that belongs to the Sidonians, as far as Aphek, to the border of the Amorites; and the land of the Gebalites, and all Lebanon toward the sunrise, from Baal-Gad below Mount Hermon as far as Lebo-Hamath; all the inhabitants of the hill country from Lebanon as far as Misrephoth-Maim, all the Sidonians. I myself will drive them out from before the children of Israel. Only allot it to Israel as an inheritance, as I have commanded you. Now therefore divide this land as an inheritance to the nine tribes and the half-tribe of Manasseh.”
The Inheritance East of the Jordan
With the other half-tribe, the Reubenites and the Gadites received their inheritance that Moses gave them beyond the Jordan toward the east, as Moses servant of the LORD gave them: from Aroer, which is on the edge of the Arnon Valley, and the city that is in the middle of the valley, and all the tableland from Medeba as far as Dibon; all the cities of Sihon king of the Amorites, who reigned in Heshbon, as far as the border of the children of Ammon; and Gilead, and the territory of the Geshurites and Maacathites, and all Mount Hermon, and all Bashan as far as Salecah; all the kingdom of Og in Bashan, who reigned in Ashtaroth and Edrei. He remained from the remnant of the Rephaim. Moses struck them and dispossessed them. But the children of Israel did not drive out the Geshurites or the Maacathites, and Geshur and Maacath live in the midst of Israel to this day.
Levi Receives No Territorial Inheritance
Only to the tribe of Levi he gave no inheritance. The offerings by fire of the LORD, the God of Israel, are their inheritance, as he spoke to them.
The Inheritance of Reuben
Moses gave an inheritance to the tribe of the children of Reuben according to their clans. Their territory was from Aroer, which is on the edge of the Arnon Valley, and the city that is in the middle of the valley, and all the tableland by Medeba; Heshbon and all its cities that are in the tableland: Dibon, Bamoth-Baal, Beth-Baal-Meon, Jahaz, Kedemoth, Mephaath, Kiriathaim, Sibmah, Zereth-Shahar on the hill of the valley, Beth-Peor, the slopes of Pisgah, and Beth-Jeshimoth; all the cities of the tableland and all the kingdom of Sihon king of the Amorites, who reigned in Heshbon, whom Moses struck with the leaders of Midian—Evi, Rekem, Zur, Hur, and Reba—the princes of Sihon who lived in the land. The children of Israel also killed Balaam son of Beor, the diviner, with the sword among the rest of their slain. The border of the children of Reuben was the Jordan and its border. This was the inheritance of the children of Reuben according to their clans, the cities and their villages.
The Inheritance of Gad
Moses gave an inheritance to the tribe of Gad, to the children of Gad according to their clans. Their territory was Jazer, all the cities of Gilead, and half the land of the children of Ammon as far as Aroer, which is east of Rabbah; and from Heshbon to Ramath-Mizpeh and Betonim, and from Mahanaim to the border of Debir; and in the valley, Beth-Haram, Beth-Nimrah, Succoth, and Zaphon, the rest of the kingdom of Sihon king of Heshbon, with the Jordan and its border as far as the end of the Sea of Chinnereth beyond the Jordan toward the east. This is the inheritance of the children of Gad according to their clans, the cities and their villages.
The Inheritance of the Half-Tribe of Manasseh
Moses gave an inheritance to the half-tribe of Manasseh, and it belonged to the half-tribe of the children of Manasseh according to their clans. Their territory was from Mahanaim, all Bashan, all the kingdom of Og king of Bashan, and all Havvoth-Jair that are in Bashan, sixty cities; half of Gilead, and Ashtaroth and Edrei, cities of the kingdom of Og in Bashan, were for the children of Machir son of Manasseh, for half of the children of Machir according to their clans. These are the inheritances that Moses distributed in the plains of Moab, beyond the Jordan east of Jericho. But to the tribe of Levi Moses gave no inheritance. The LORD, the God of Israel, is their inheritance, as he spoke to them.
