The Woman Caught in Adultery
But Jesus went to the Mount of Olives. And early in the morning he came again into the temple, and all the people were coming to him, and sitting down he was teaching them.
And the scribes and the Pharisees bring a woman caught in adultery, and placing her in the midst, they say to him, “Teacher, this woman has been caught in the act, committing adultery. Now in the Law Moses commanded us to stone such women; therefore what do you say?”
But they were saying this, testing him, so that they might have something to accuse him of. But Jesus, bending down, was writing with his finger on the ground. But when they persisted in asking him, he straightened up and said to them, “The one among you without sin—let him be the first to cast a stone at her.”
And again bending down, he was writing on the ground. And they, hearing it, were going out one by one, beginning from the older ones, and he was left alone, and the woman in the midst. And straightening up, Jesus said to her, “Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?”
And she said, “No one, Lord.” And Jesus said, “Neither do I condemn you; go, and from now on sin no more.”
I Am the Light of the World
Therefore Jesus spoke again to them, saying, “I am the light of the world; the one following me will certainly not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”
Therefore the Pharisees said to him, “You are bearing witness about yourself; your testimony is not true.” Jesus answered and said to them, “Even if I bear witness about myself, my testimony is true, because I know where I came from and where I am going, but you do not know where I come from or where I am going.
You judge according to the flesh; I judge no one. But even if I do judge, my judgment is true, because I am not alone, but I and the Father who sent me.
And also in your Law it has been written that the testimony of two people is true. I am the one bearing witness about myself, and the Father who sent me bears witness about me.”
Therefore they were saying to him, “Where is your Father?” Jesus answered, “You know neither me nor my Father; if you knew me, you would know my Father also.”
These words he spoke in the treasury while teaching in the temple, and no one seized him, because his hour had not yet come.
You Will Die in Your Sins
Therefore he said again to them, “I am going away, and you will seek me and will die in your sin; where I am going you are not able to come.” Therefore the Jews were saying, “Will he kill himself, that he says, ‘Where I am going you are not able to come’?”
And he was saying to them, “You are from below; I am from above. You are of this world; I am not of this world. Therefore I said to you that you will die in your sins; for unless you believe that I am, you will die in your sins.”
Therefore they were saying to him, “Who are you?” Jesus said to them, “Just what I have been saying to you from the beginning. I have many things to speak and to judge concerning you, but the one who sent me is true, and I speak to the world the things that I heard from him.”
They did not understand that he was speaking to them about the Father. Therefore Jesus said, “When you lift up the Son of Man, then you will know that I am, and that I do nothing from myself, but just as the Father taught me, I speak these things. And the one who sent me is with me; he has not left me alone, because I always do the things pleasing to him.”
As he was speaking these things, many believed in him.
The Truth Will Set You Free
Therefore Jesus was saying to the Jews who had believed him, “If you remain in my word, you are truly my disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”
They answered him, “We are Abraham’s offspring and have never been enslaved to anyone; how is it that you say, ‘You will become free’?” Jesus answered them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, everyone doing sin is a slave of sin.
And the slave does not remain in the house forever; the son remains forever. Therefore if the Son sets you free, you will be truly free.
I know that you are Abraham’s offspring; but you seek to kill me because my word has no place in you. I speak what I have seen with the Father; therefore you also do what you have heard from your father.”
They answered and said to him, “Our father is Abraham.” Jesus says to them, “If you were children of Abraham, you would be doing the works of Abraham. But now you seek to kill me, a man who has spoken the truth to you which I heard from God; this Abraham did not do.
You are doing the works of your father.” They said to him, “We were not born of sexual immorality; we have one Father—God.”
Jesus said to them, “If God were your Father, you would love me, for I came out from God and have come; for neither have I come from myself, but that one sent me. Why do you not understand my speech? Because you are not able to hear my word.
You are of your father the devil, and you want to do the desires of your father. That one was a murderer from the beginning and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. Whenever he speaks the lie, he speaks from his own, because he is a liar and the father of it.
But because I speak the truth, you do not believe me. Which of you convicts me of sin? If I speak truth, why do you not believe me? The one who is of God hears the words of God; for this reason you do not hear, because you are not of God.”
Before Abraham Was, I Am
The Jews answered and said to him, “Do we not rightly say that you are a Samaritan and have a demon?” Jesus answered, “I do not have a demon, but I honor my Father, and you dishonor me. But I do not seek my glory; there is one who seeks and judges.
Truly, truly, I say to you, if anyone keeps my word, he will certainly never see death.”
The Jews said to him, “Now we know that you have a demon! Abraham died, and the prophets, and you say, ‘If anyone keeps my word, he will never taste death.’ Are you greater than our father Abraham, who died? And the prophets died. Who do you make yourself out to be?”
Jesus answered, “If I glorify myself, my glory is nothing; it is my Father who glorifies me, of whom you say, ‘He is our God,’ and you have not known him, but I know him. And if I say that I do not know him, I will be like you, a liar; but I know him and keep his word.
Abraham your father rejoiced that he might see my day, and he saw it and was glad.” Therefore the Jews said to him, “You are not yet fifty years old, and have you seen Abraham?” Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham came to be, I am.”
Therefore they picked up stones to throw at him, but Jesus hid himself and went out of the temple.
