The Healing at the Pool
After these things there was a feast of the Jews, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. Now there is in Jerusalem by the Sheep Gate a pool, which is called in Hebrew Bethesda, having five porticoes. In these lay a multitude of those who were sick, blind, lame, paralyzed.
And a certain man was there who had been in his sickness for thirty-eight years. Jesus, seeing him lying there and knowing that he had already been there a long time, says to him, “Do you want to become well?”
The sick man answered him, “Sir, I have no one that when the water is stirred I might be put into the pool; but while I am coming, another goes down before me.” Jesus says to him, “Rise, take up your mat and walk.” And immediately the man became well, and he took up his mat and began to walk.
Therefore the Jews were saying to the one who had been healed, “It is the Sabbath, and it is not lawful for you to carry your mat.” But he answered them, “The one who made me well, that one said to me, ‘Take up your mat and walk.’”
They asked him, “Who is the man who said to you, ‘Take up and walk’?” But the one who had been healed did not know who it was, for Jesus had withdrawn, a crowd being in the place.
Afterward Jesus finds him in the temple and said to him, “Behold, you have become well; sin no more, so that nothing worse may happen to you.” The man went away and reported to the Jews that it was Jesus who had made him well.
Jesus Equal with God
And for this reason the Jews were persecuting Jesus, because he was doing these things on the Sabbath. But he answered them, “My Father is working until now, and I also am working.”
For this reason therefore the Jews were seeking all the more to kill him, because not only was he breaking the Sabbath, but also calling God his own Father, making himself equal with God.
The Authority of the Son
Therefore Jesus answered and was saying to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, the Son is not able to do anything from himself, unless he sees the Father doing it; for whatever that one does, these things also the Son likewise does. For the Father loves the Son and shows him all that he himself is doing, and greater works than these he will show him, so that you may marvel.
For just as the Father raises the dead and gives life, so also the Son gives life to whom he wills. For neither does the Father judge anyone, but he has given all judgment to the Son, so that all may honor the Son just as they honor the Father. The one not honoring the Son does not honor the Father who sent him.
Truly, truly, I say to you, the one who hears my word and believes the one who sent me has eternal life and does not come into judgment, but has passed from death into life.
Truly, truly, I say to you, an hour is coming and now is, when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God, and those who hear will live. For just as the Father has life in himself, so he has granted also to the Son to have life in himself, and he gave him authority to execute judgment, because he is the Son of Man.
Do not marvel at this, because an hour is coming in which all those in the tombs will hear his voice and will come out—those who have done good to a resurrection of life, but those who have practiced evil to a resurrection of judgment.
I am not able to do anything from myself; just as I hear, I judge, and my judgment is righteous, because I do not seek my own will but the will of the one who sent me.
Witnesses to Jesus
If I bear witness about myself, my witness is not true. There is another who bears witness about me, and I know that the witness which he bears about me is true.
You have sent to John, and he has borne witness to the truth. But I do not receive testimony from man, but I say these things so that you may be saved. That one was the burning and shining lamp, and you were willing to rejoice for a time in his light.
But I have the testimony greater than John’s; for the works that the Father has given me to complete, these very works that I am doing testify about me that the Father has sent me. And the Father who sent me has himself borne witness about me. You have neither heard his voice at any time nor seen his form, and you do not have his word abiding in you, because whom that one sent, this one you do not believe.
You search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life, and these are the ones bearing witness about me, and you are not willing to come to me so that you may have life.
I do not receive glory from people, but I know you, that you do not have the love of God in yourselves. I have come in the name of my Father, and you do not receive me; if another comes in his own name, that one you will receive.
How are you able to believe, receiving glory from one another and not seeking the glory that is from the only God? Do not think that I will accuse you to the Father; there is one who accuses you—Moses, in whom you have hoped. For if you believed Moses, you would believe me, for he wrote about me. But if you do not believe his writings, how will you believe my words?”
