John 14

The Way, the Truth, and the Life

“Do not let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God; trust also in me. In my Father’s house are many dwelling places. If it were not so, would I have told you that I am going to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and take you to myself, so that where I am, you may be also. And you know the way to where I am going.” Thomas said, “Lord, we do not know where you are going. How can we know the way?” Jesus said, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. If you have known me, you will also know my Father. From now on you know him and have seen him.” Philip said, “Lord, show us the Father, and that will be enough for us.” Jesus said, “Have I been with you so long, and you still do not know me, Philip? Whoever has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? Do you not trust that I am in the Father and the Father is in me? The words I speak to you I do not speak from myself. The Father remaining in me does his works. Trust me that I am in the Father and the Father is in me. Otherwise, trust because of the works themselves. Truly, truly, I tell you, whoever trusts in me will also do the works I do, and will do greater works than these because I am going to the Father. Whatever you ask in my name, I will do, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If you ask me anything in my name, I will do it.

Another Advocate

“If you love me, you will keep my commandments. And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate to be with you forever: the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive because it neither sees nor knows him. You know him because he remains with you and will be in you. I will not leave you as orphans; I am coming to you. In a little while the world will no longer see me, but you will see me. Because I live, you also will live. On that day you will know that I am in my Father, you are in me, and I am in you. Whoever has my commandments and keeps them is the one who loves me. The one who loves me will be loved by my Father; I too will love that person and reveal myself to them.” Judas—not Iscariot—said, “Lord, what has happened that you are going to reveal yourself to us and not to the world?” Jesus answered, “If anyone loves me, they will keep my word. My Father will love them, and we will come to them and make our dwelling with them. Whoever does not love me does not keep my words. The word you hear is not mine but belongs to the Father who sent me. I have spoken these things to you while remaining with you. But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you everything and remind you of everything I told you.

My Peace I Give You

“Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give it to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled or afraid. You heard me tell you, ‘I am going away, and I am coming to you.’ If you loved me, you would rejoice that I am going to the Father, because the Father is greater than I. I have told you now before it happens so that when it happens, you may trust. I will not speak with you much longer, because the ruler of the world is coming. He has no claim on me. But this happens so that the world may know that I love the Father and do just as the Father commanded me. Get up. Let us leave here.”
