John 12

Mary Anoints Jesus at Bethany

1Therefore six days before the Passover, Jesus came to Bethany, where Lazarus was, whom Jesus had raised from the dead. 2So they made him a supper there, and Martha was serving, but Lazarus was one of those reclining with him.

3Then Mary, taking a pound of costly perfume of pure nard, anointed the feet of Jesus and wiped his feet with her hair, and the house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume.

4But Judas Iscariot, one of his disciples, the one who was about to betray him, says, 5“Why was this perfume not sold for three hundred denarii and given to the poor?” 6But he said this not because he cared about the poor, but because he was a thief, and having the money box, he used to take what was put into it.

7Therefore Jesus said, “Leave her alone, so that she may keep it for the day of my burial. 8For the poor you always have with you, but you do not always have me.”

9Therefore a large crowd of the Jews learned that he was there, and they came not because of Jesus only, but also so that they might see Lazarus, whom he had raised from the dead. 10But the chief priests planned to put Lazarus also to death, 11because on account of him many of the Jews were going away and believing in Jesus.

The Triumphal Entry

12On the next day the great crowd that had come to the feast, hearing that Jesus is coming to Jerusalem, 13took branches of palm trees and went out to meet him, and they were crying out,

“Hosanna!

Blessed is the one coming in the name of the Lord,

even the King of Israel!”

14And Jesus, finding a young donkey, sat on it, just as it is written, 15“Do not fear, daughter of Zion;

behold, your king is coming,

sitting on a donkey’s colt.”

16These things his disciples did not understand at first, but when Jesus was glorified, then they remembered that these things had been written about him and that they had done these things to him.

17Therefore the crowd who were with him when he called Lazarus out of the tomb and raised him from the dead were bearing witness. 18For this reason also the crowd went to meet him, because they heard that he had done this sign. 19Therefore the Pharisees said to one another, “You see that you are accomplishing nothing; behold, the world has gone after him.”

Some Greeks Seek Jesus

20Now there were some Greeks among those going up to worship at the feast; 21these therefore came to Philip, who was from Bethsaida of Galilee, and were asking him, saying, “Sir, we wish to see Jesus.” 22Philip comes and tells Andrew; Andrew and Philip come and tell Jesus.

The Hour Has Come

23And Jesus answers them, saying, “The hour has come that the Son of Man should be glorified. 24Truly, truly, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falling into the earth dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it bears much fruit.

25The one loving his life loses it, and the one hating his life in this world will keep it to eternal life. 26If anyone serves me, he must follow me; and where I am, there also my servant will be; if anyone serves me, the Father will honor him.

27Now my soul has been troubled, and what shall I say? ‘Father, save me from this hour’? But for this reason I came to this hour. 28Father, glorify your name.” Then a voice came from heaven: “I have both glorified it and will glorify it again.”

29Therefore the crowd standing there and hearing it were saying that it had thundered; others were saying, “An angel has spoken to him.” 30Jesus answered and said, “This voice has not come for my sake but for yours.

31Now is the judgment of this world; now the ruler of this world will be cast out. 32And I, if I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all to myself.” 33But he was saying this to indicate what kind of death he was about to die.

34The crowd then answered him, “We have heard from the Law that the Christ remains forever; and how do you say that the Son of Man must be lifted up? Who is this Son of Man?”

35Therefore Jesus said to them, “For a little while longer the light is among you. Walk while you have the light, so that darkness may not overtake you; and the one walking in darkness does not know where he is going. 36While you have the light, believe in the light, so that you may become sons of light.”

These things Jesus spoke, and going away he was hidden from them.

The Unbelief of the People

37But though he had done so many signs before them, they were not believing in him, 38so that the word of Isaiah the prophet might be fulfilled, which he said:

“Lord, who has believed our report?

And to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?”

39For this reason they were not able to believe, because again Isaiah said, 40“He has blinded their eyes and hardened their heart,

so that they may not see with their eyes and understand with their heart and turn, and I would heal them.”

41Isaiah said these things because he saw his glory and spoke about him.

42Nevertheless even from among the rulers many believed in him, but because of the Pharisees they were not confessing him, so that they would not be put out of the synagogue; 43for they loved the glory of people more than the glory of God.

Jesus Came to Save the World

44And Jesus cried out and said, “The one believing in me does not believe in me but in the one who sent me, 45and the one seeing me sees the one who sent me.

46I have come as light into the world, so that everyone believing in me may not remain in darkness. 47And if anyone hears my words and does not keep them, I do not judge him; for I did not come to judge the world but to save the world.

48The one rejecting me and not receiving my words has one who judges him; the word that I have spoken—that will judge him on the last day. 49For I have not spoken from myself, but the Father who sent me has himself given me commandment what I should say and what I should speak.

50And I know that his commandment is eternal life; therefore the things I speak, just as the Father has said to me, so I speak.”
