Job 37
My Heart Trembles at This
“At this also my heart trembles
and leaps from its place.
Listen carefully to the thunder of his voice
and the rumbling that goes out from his mouth.
Under all the heavens he sends it,
and his lightning to the edges of the earth.
After it a voice roars;
he thunders with his majestic voice,
and he does not hold back the flashes when his voice is heard.
God thunders wondrously with his voice;
he does great things that we cannot know.
He Says to the Snow, Fall on the Earth
For he says to the snow, ‘Fall on the earth,’
and to the rain shower,
and to his mighty showers of rain.
He seals the hand of every human,
so that all people may know his work.
Then the animal enters its lair
and remains in its den.
From the chamber comes the storm,
and cold from the scattering winds.
By the breath of God ice is given,
and the broad waters are frozen.
The Clouds Turn According to His Guidance
He loads the thick cloud with moisture;
the cloud scatters his lightning.
It turns around and around by his guidance,
to do all that he commands it
on the face of the inhabited earth.
Whether for a rod,
or for his land,
or for steadfast love,
he causes it to find its mark.
Stop and Consider the Wonders of God
Give ear to this, Job;
stand still
and consider the wonders of God.
Do you know how God appoints them
and causes the lightning of his cloud to shine?
Do you know the balancing of the clouds,
the wonders of one complete in knowledge?
You whose garments are hot
when the earth is still because of the south wind,
can you, with him, spread out the skies,
hard as a cast-metal mirror?
Teach Us What We Should Say to Him
Teach us what we should say to him;
we cannot arrange our case because of darkness.
Should it be told him that I would speak?
If a man speaks, will he surely be swallowed up?
And now people cannot look at the light
when it is bright in the skies,
after the wind has passed and cleared them.
From the north comes golden splendor;
around God is awe-inspiring majesty.
The Almighty—we cannot find him;
he is great in power,
and in justice and abundant righteousness
he does not afflict.
Therefore people fear him;
he does not regard any who are wise in their own heart.”
