Jeremiah 33

Great and Hidden Things

The word of the LORD came to Jeremiah a second time while he was still confined in the court of the guard, saying, “Thus says the LORD who makes it, the LORD who forms it to establish it—the LORD is his name: Call to me, and I will answer you and tell you great and inaccessible things that you have not known.

Houses Torn Down for the Siege

“For thus says the LORD, the God of Israel, concerning the houses of this city and concerning the houses of the kings of Judah that are torn down against the siege ramps and against the sword: They are coming to fight the Chaldeans, but only to fill them with the corpses of those whom I struck in my anger and fury, because I hid my face from this city because of all their evil.

I Will Bring Healing and Peace

“Look, I will bring it healing and cure, and I will heal them. I will reveal to them an abundance of peace and faithfulness. I will restore the fortunes of Judah and the fortunes of Israel and build them as at first. I will cleanse them from all their guilt by which they sinned against me, and I will forgive all their guilt by which they sinned against me and rebelled against me. This city will be to me a name of joy, praise, and glory before all the nations of the earth who hear all the good that I do for them. They will fear and tremble because of all the good and all the peace that I provide for it.

The Sound of Joy Will Return

“Thus says the LORD: In this place of which you say, ‘It is a ruin, without human or animal,’ in the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem that are desolate, without human, without inhabitant, and without animal, there will again be heard the sound of joy and the sound of gladness, the voice of bridegroom and the voice of bride, the voice of those who say,

‘Give thanks to the LORD of Hosts,
for the LORD is good,
for his steadfast love is forever,’

and of those who bring thanksgiving offerings into the house of the LORD. For I will restore the fortunes of the land as at first,” says the LORD.

Flocks Will Again Pass Under the Hand

Thus says the LORD of Hosts: “In this place that is a ruin, without human or animal, and in all its cities, there will again be pasture for shepherds resting their flocks. In the cities of the hill country, in the cities of the foothills, in the cities of the Negev, in the land of Benjamin, in the places around Jerusalem, and in the cities of Judah, flocks will again pass under the hands of the one who counts them,” says the LORD.

A Righteous Branch for David

“Look, days are coming,” says the LORD, “when I will establish the good word that I spoke concerning the house of Israel and concerning the house of Judah. In those days and at that time
I will cause a righteous Branch
to sprout for David,
and he will practice justice and righteousness
in the land.
In those days Judah will be saved,
and Jerusalem will dwell securely.
And this is what she will be called:
‘The LORD Is Our Righteousness.’

David and the Levitical Priests

For thus says the LORD: “David will never lack a man to sit on the throne of the house of Israel, and the Levitical priests will never lack a man before me to offer burnt offerings, burn grain offerings, and make sacrifices all the days.”

Covenant with Day and Night

The word of the LORD came to Jeremiah, saying, “Thus says the LORD: If you can break my covenant with the day and my covenant with the night, so that day and night do not come at their appointed time, then my covenant with David my servant may also be broken, so that he has no son reigning on his throne, and my covenant with the Levitical priests, my servants. As the host of heaven cannot be counted and the sand of the sea cannot be measured, so I will multiply the offspring of David my servant and the Levites who minister to me.”

I Will Restore Their Fortunes

The word of the LORD came to Jeremiah, saying, “Have you not seen what this people has spoken, saying, ‘The two families that the LORD chose, he has rejected them’? Thus they despise my people so that they are no longer regarded as a nation before them. Thus says the LORD: If my covenant with day and night does not stand, if I did not appoint the ordinances of heaven and earth, then I would reject the offspring of Jacob and David my servant, not taking from his offspring rulers over the offspring of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. For I will restore their fortunes and have compassion on them.”
