Isaiah 15

An Oracle Against Moab

An oracle concerning Moab:
In a night Ar of Moab is devastated, silenced;
in a night Kir of Moab is devastated, silenced.
Moab has gone up to the temple,
to Dibon’s high places, to weep.
Over Nebo and Medeba it wails.
Every head is shaved;
every beard is cut off.
In its streets they wear sackcloth;
on rooftops and in squares
everyone wails,
melting into tears.
Heshbon and Elealeh cry out;
their voices are heard as far as Jahaz.
So Moab’s armed men cry aloud;
its very life trembles.

My heart cries out for Moab.
Its fugitives reach Zoar, Eglath-shelishiyah.
They climb Luhith’s ascent weeping;
on the road to Horonaim
they raise a cry of destruction.
Nimrim’s waters are desolate;
the grass has dried, new growth has ended,
and nothing green remains.
So the wealth they have gained,
all they have stored,
they carry across the Wadi of the Willows.
The cry circles Moab’s borders;
its wailing reaches Eglaim,
its wailing reaches Beer-elim.

Dimon’s waters are full of blood,
yet I will bring more upon Dimon:
a lion against Moab’s fugitives
and those left in the land.
