Genesis 16
Hagar and Ishmael
Now Sarai, Abram’s wife, had borne him no children. She had an Egyptian servant whose name was Hagar. And Sarai said to Abram, “See now, the LORD has prevented me from bearing children. Go in to my servant; perhaps I shall be built up through her.” And Abram listened to the voice of Sarai. So Sarai, Abram’s wife, took Hagar the Egyptian, her servant, after Abram had dwelt ten years in the land of Canaan, and gave her to Abram her husband as a wife. And he went in to Hagar, and she conceived. And when she saw that she had conceived, her mistress became insignificant in her eyes.
Then Sarai said to Abram, “May the wrong done to me be upon you. I gave my servant into your embrace, and when she saw that she had conceived, I became insignificant in her eyes. May the LORD judge between me and you.” But Abram said to Sarai, “See, your servant is in your hand. Do to her what is good in your eyes.” Then Sarai dealt harshly with her, and she fled from her.
The Angel of the LORD and Hagar
The angel of the LORD found her by a spring of water in the wilderness, the spring on the way to Shur. And he said, “Hagar, servant of Sarai, where have you come from, and where are you going?” She said, “I am fleeing from my mistress Sarai.” Then the angel of the LORD said to her, “Return to your mistress and submit yourself under her hand.”
And the angel of the LORD said to her, “I will surely multiply your offspring so greatly that they cannot be counted for multitude.”
And the angel of the LORD said to her,
“Behold, you are pregnant
and shall bear a son,
and you shall call his name Ishmael,
for the LORD has heard your affliction.
He shall be like a wild donkey of a man,
his hand against everyone
and everyone’s hand against him,
and he shall dwell opposite all his kin.”
Hagar Names the LORD
So she called the name of the LORD who spoke to her, “You are El-roi,” for she said, “Have I really seen here the one who sees me?” Therefore the well was called Beer-lahai-roi. Behold, it is between Kadesh and Bered.
The Birth of Ishmael
And Hagar bore Abram a son, and Abram called the name of his son, whom Hagar bore, Ishmael. Abram was eighty-six years old when Hagar bore Ishmael to Abram.
