Genesis 1

The Beginning

1In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. 2The earth was unformed and empty. Darkness lay over the deep, and God's Spirit hovered over the waters.

The First Day

3Then God said, “Let there be light,” and light came to be. 4God saw that the light was good and separated the light from the darkness. 5God named the light Day and the darkness Night. Evening came, and morning came: day one.

The Second Day

6God said, “Let there be a dome between the waters, separating water from water.” 7God made the dome and separated the water beneath it from the water above it. And so it was. 8God named the dome Sky. Evening came, and morning came: the second day.

The Third Day

9God said, “Let the water beneath the sky gather in one place, and let dry ground appear.” And so it was. 10God named the dry ground Land and the gathered waters Seas. God saw that it was good.

11God said, “Let the land grow vegetation: plants that produce seed and fruit trees that bear fruit with seed in it, each of its own kind, on the land.” And so it was. 12The land grew vegetation: plants producing seed of their own kinds and trees bearing fruit with seed in it, each of its own kind. God saw that it was good. 13Evening came, and morning came: the third day.

The Fourth Day

14God said, “Let lights appear in the dome of the sky to separate day from night. Let them serve as signs and mark appointed times, days, and years. 15Let them shine in the dome of the sky to give light to the earth.” And so it was.

16God made the two great lights: the larger light to rule the day and the smaller light to rule the night. God made the stars too. 17God placed them in the dome of the sky to shine on the earth, 18to rule day and night, and to separate light from darkness. God saw that it was good. 19Evening came, and morning came: the fourth day.

The Fifth Day

20God said, “Let the waters teem with living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth across the dome of the sky.” 21God created the great sea creatures and all the living things that move and teem in the waters, each of its own kind, and every kind of winged bird. God saw that it was good. 22God blessed them: “Be fruitful, multiply, and fill the waters of the seas. Let the birds multiply on the earth.” 23Evening came, and morning came: the fifth day.

The Sixth Day

24God said, “Let the land produce living creatures of every kind: livestock, creatures that crawl, and wild animals, each of its own kind.” And so it was. 25God made every kind of wild animal, every kind of livestock, and every kind of creature that crawls on the ground. God saw that it was good.

26God said, “Let us make humanity in our image, in our likeness. Let them rule the fish in the sea, the birds in the sky, the livestock, the whole earth, and every creature that crawls on it.”

27God created humanity in his image;
in God's image he created them;
male and female he created them.

28God blessed them and said, “Be fruitful, multiply, fill the earth, and subdue it. Rule the fish in the sea, the birds in the sky, and every living creature that moves on the earth.”

29God said, “Look, I give you every seed-producing plant on all the earth and every tree with seed-bearing fruit. These will be your food. 30To every wild animal, every bird in the sky, and every creature that crawls on the earth—everything that has life in it—I give green plants for food.” And so it was.

31God looked at everything that God had made: it was very good. Evening came, and morning came: the sixth day.
