Israel Defeats Og of Bashan

1“Then we turned and went up by the way of Bashan, and Og king of Bashan came out against us, he and all his people, for battle at Edrei. 2The LORD said to me, ‘Do not fear him, for I have given him, all his people, and his land into your hand. You shall do to him as you did to Sihon king of the Amorites, who lived in Heshbon.’ 3So the LORD our God also gave into our hand Og king of Bashan and all his people, and we struck him until no survivor remained to him. 4We captured all his cities at that time. There was not a town that we did not take from them: sixty cities, all the region of Argob, the kingdom of Og in Bashan. 5All these were cities fortified with high walls, gates, and bars, besides very many unwalled villages. 6We devoted them to destruction, as we had done to Sihon king of Heshbon, devoting every city—men, women, and little children. 7But all the livestock and the spoil of the cities we took as plunder for ourselves.

The Land East of the Jordan

8“So at that time we took the land from the hand of the two kings of the Amorites who were beyond the Jordan, from the Wadi Arnon as far as Mount Hermon— 9the Sidonians call Hermon Sirion, and the Amorites call it Senir— 10all the cities of the tableland, all Gilead, and all Bashan as far as Salecah and Edrei, cities of the kingdom of Og in Bashan. 11For only Og king of Bashan remained from the remnant of the Rephaim. Look, his bed was a bed of iron. Is it not in Rabbah of the children of Ammon? Nine cubits was its length and four cubits its width, by the ordinary cubit.

The Eastern Tribes Receive Their Land

12“This land we possessed at that time. From Aroer, which is on the edge of the Wadi Arnon, and half the hill country of Gilead with its cities, I gave to the Reubenites and the Gadites. 13The rest of Gilead and all Bashan, the kingdom of Og, I gave to the half-tribe of Manasseh—all the region of Argob. All Bashan was called the land of Rephaim. 14Jair son of Manasseh took all the region of Argob as far as the border of the Geshurites and Maacathites and called them, that is Bashan, after his own name, Havvoth-Jair, to this day. 15To Machir I gave Gilead. 16To the Reubenites and the Gadites I gave from Gilead as far as the Wadi Arnon, the middle of the wadi as a border, and as far as the Wadi Jabbok, the border of the children of Ammon, 17and the Arabah, with the Jordan as a border, from Chinnereth as far as the Sea of the Arabah, the Salt Sea, under the slopes of Pisgah toward the sunrise.

The Eastern Tribes Must Fight with Their Brothers

18“I commanded you at that time, saying, ‘The LORD your God has given you this land to possess. All your warriors shall cross over armed before your brothers, the children of Israel. 19Only your wives, your little children, and your livestock—I know that you have much livestock—shall remain in your cities that I have given you, 20until the LORD gives rest to your brothers as to you, and they also possess the land that the LORD your God is giving them beyond the Jordan. Then each of you may return to the possession that I have given you.’

Moses Encourages Joshua

21“I commanded Joshua at that time, saying, ‘Your eyes have seen all that the LORD your God has done to these two kings. So the LORD will do to all the kingdoms into which you are crossing. 22You shall not fear them, for the LORD your God is the one fighting for you.’

Moses Pleads to Enter the Land

23“I pleaded with the LORD at that time, saying, 24‘Lord GOD, you have begun to show your servant your greatness and your strong hand, for what god is there in the heavens or on the earth who can do according to your works and according to your mighty acts? 25Please let me cross over and see the good land beyond the Jordan, this good hill country and Lebanon.’ 26But the LORD was furious with me because of you and would not listen to me. The LORD said to me, ‘Enough for you! Do not speak to me again about this matter. 27Go up to the top of Pisgah and lift your eyes westward, northward, southward, and eastward, and see with your eyes, for you shall not cross this Jordan. 28But command Joshua, strengthen him and make him courageous, for he shall cross over before this people and he shall cause them to inherit the land that you will see.’ 29So we remained in the valley opposite Beth-Peor.
