Amos 8
The Basket of Summer Fruit
Thus the Lord GOD showed me:
Look, a basket
of summer fruit.
He said,
“What do you see, Amos?”
And I said,
“A basket of summer fruit.”
Then the LORD said to me:
“The end has come
upon my people Israel.
I will no longer pass by him.
The songs of the palace
will become wailings
on that day,”
says the Lord GOD.
“Many will be the corpses;
in every place they will throw them down.
Silence!”
Hear This, You Who Trample the Needy
Hear this,
you who trample the needy
and bring the poor of the land
to an end,
saying,
“When will the new moon be over,
so that we may sell grain,
and the Sabbath,
so that we may open the wheat market—
making the ephah small,
making the shekel great,
and twisting deceitful scales,
buying the poor for silver
and the needy for a pair of sandals,
and selling even the sweepings
of the grain?”
The LORD Will Never Forget Their Deeds
The LORD has sworn
by the Pride of Jacob:
“Surely I will never forget
any of their deeds.
Will not the land tremble
because of this,
and everyone who lives in it mourn?
All of it will rise like the Nile,
be tossed about,
and sink again
like the Nile of Egypt.
I Will Make the Sun Go Down at Noon
“And it will be on that day,”
says the Lord GOD,
“I will make the sun go down at noon
and darken the earth
in broad daylight.
I will turn your festivals into mourning
and all your songs into lamentation.
I will bring sackcloth upon every waist
and baldness upon every head.
I will make it like mourning for an only child,
and its end
like a bitter day.
A Famine of Hearing the Words of the LORD
“Look, days are coming,”
says the Lord GOD,
“when I will send a famine upon the land—
not a famine for bread
and not a thirst for water,
but for hearing
the words of the LORD.
They will wander from sea to sea
and from north to east;
they will roam about
seeking the word of the LORD,
but they will not find it.
On that day
the beautiful young women
and the young men
will faint from thirst.
Those Who Swear by Samaria’s Guilt Will Fall
Those who swear
by the guilt of Samaria
and say,
“As your god lives, O Dan,”
and,
“As the way of Beersheba lives,”
they will fall
and never rise again.
