Amos 6
Woe to Those at Ease in Zion
Woe to those at ease in Zion
and those secure on the mountain of Samaria,
the notable people of the first of the nations,
to whom the house of Israel comes!
Cross over to Calneh and see;
from there go to Hamath the great;
then go down to Gath of the Philistines.
Are you better than these kingdoms?
Or is their territory greater
than your territory?
You who put far away the evil day
and bring near
the seat of violence;
They Are Not Grieved over the Ruin of Joseph
who lie on beds of ivory
and sprawl upon their couches,
who eat lambs from the flock
and calves from the midst of the stall;
who improvise songs
to the sound of the harp
and, like David,
devise instruments for themselves;
who drink wine from bowls
and anoint themselves
with the finest oils,
but are not grieved
over the ruin of Joseph.
Therefore now they will go into exile
at the head of the exiles,
and the revelry
of those who sprawl
will pass away.
I Abhor the Pride of Jacob
The Lord GOD has sworn by himself,
says the LORD, the God of Hosts:
I abhor the pride of Jacob
and hate his fortresses,
and I will hand over the city
and all that fills it.
And it will be,
if ten men remain in one house,
they will die.
When a man’s relative
and the one who burns the body
lifts him up
to bring the bones out of the house,
he will say to one who is in the innermost part of the house,
“Is anyone still with you?”
And he will say, “No.”
Then he will say, “Silence!
For the name of the LORD
must not be mentioned.”
For look, the LORD commands,
and the great house
will be struck into fragments,
and the small house
into cracks.
You Have Turned Justice into Poison
Do horses run upon rock?
Does one plow the sea with oxen?
Yet you have turned justice into poison
and the fruit of righteousness
into wormwood—
you who rejoice over Lo-Debar,
who say,
“Have we not by our own strength
taken Karnaim for ourselves?”
For look, I am raising up against you,
house of Israel,
a nation,
says the LORD, the God of Hosts,
and they will oppress you
from Lebo-Hamath
to the Wadi of the Arabah.
