2 Timothy 1
Greeting
Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus through God’s will, according to the promise of life that is in Christ Jesus, to Timothy, my beloved child: Grace, mercy, and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord.
Rekindle God’s Gift
I thank God, whom I serve with a clear conscience as my ancestors did, as I remember you constantly in my prayers night and day. Remembering your tears, I long to see you so that I may be filled with joy. I am reminded of the sincere trust that is in you, which lived first in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice and, I am convinced, lives in you too. For this reason I remind you to rekindle God’s gift that is in you through the laying on of my hands. For God did not give us a spirit of cowardice but of power, love, and self-control.
Do Not Be Ashamed of the Testimony
Therefore do not be ashamed of the testimony about our Lord or of me, his prisoner. Instead, share in suffering for the good news according to God’s power, who saved us and called us with a holy calling, not according to our works but according to his own purpose and grace. This grace was given to us in Christ Jesus before eternal times, but has now been revealed through the appearing of our Savior Christ Jesus, who abolished death and brought life and immortality to light through the good news. For this good news I was appointed a herald, apostle, and teacher. This is also why I suffer these things. But I am not ashamed, because I know the one I have trusted, and I am convinced that he is able to guard what I have entrusted to him until that day.
Guard the Good Deposit
Hold to the pattern of sound words you heard from me, in the trust and love that are in Christ Jesus. Guard the good deposit entrusted to you through the Holy Spirit who lives in us. You know that everyone in Asia has turned away from me, including Phygelus and Hermogenes. May the Lord give mercy to Onesiphorus’ household, because he often refreshed me and was not ashamed of my chain. Instead, when he arrived in Rome, he searched diligently for me and found me. May the Lord grant him to find mercy from the Lord on that day. And you know very well how much service he rendered in Ephesus.
