1 Chronicles 27

1The people of Israel, according to their number—the heads of ancestral houses, the commanders of thousands and of hundreds, and their officers who served the king in every matter of the divisions that came in and went out month by month, for all the months of the year—each division was twenty-four thousand.

2Over the first division for the first month was Jashobeam son of Zabdiel; his division numbered twenty-four thousand. 3He was from the descendants of Perez, chief of all the commanders of the army for the first month. 4Over the division for the second month was Dodai the Ahohite; Mikloth was the leader of his division, which numbered twenty-four thousand. 5The commander of the army for the third month was Benaiah son of Jehoiada the priest, the chief; his division numbered twenty-four thousand. 6This was Benaiah, a warrior among the Thirty and over the Thirty; and his son Ammizabad was over his division. 7The fourth, for the fourth month, was Asahel brother of Joab, and after him his son Zebadiah; his division numbered twenty-four thousand. 8The fifth, for the fifth month, was the commander Shamhuth the Izrahite; his division numbered twenty-four thousand. 9The sixth, for the sixth month, was Ira son of Ikkesh the Tekoite; his division numbered twenty-four thousand. 10The seventh, for the seventh month, was Helez the Pelonite, from the Ephraimites; his division numbered twenty-four thousand. 11The eighth, for the eighth month, was Sibbecai the Hushathite, of the Zerahites; his division numbered twenty-four thousand. 12The ninth, for the ninth month, was Abiezer the Anathothite, a Benjaminite; his division numbered twenty-four thousand. 13The tenth, for the tenth month, was Maharai the Netophathite, of the Zerahites; his division numbered twenty-four thousand. 14The eleventh, for the eleventh month, was Benaiah the Pirathonite, from the Ephraimites; his division numbered twenty-four thousand. 15The twelfth, for the twelfth month, was Heldai the Netophathite, of Othniel; his division numbered twenty-four thousand.

16Over the tribes of Israel: for the Reubenites, Eliezer son of Zichri was leader; for the Simeonites, Shephatiah son of Maacah; 17for Levi, Hashabiah son of Kemuel; for Aaron, Zadok; 18for Judah, Elihu, one of David’s brothers; for Issachar, Omri son of Michael; 19for Zebulun, Ishmaiah son of Obadiah; for Naphtali, Jeremoth son of Azriel; 20for the Ephraimites, Hoshea son of Azaziah; for half the tribe of Manasseh, Joel son of Pedaiah; 21for the half-tribe of Manasseh in Gilead, Iddo son of Zechariah; for Benjamin, Jaasiel son of Abner; 22for Dan, Azarel son of Jeroham. These were the commanders of the tribes of Israel.

23David did not take their number from those twenty years old and under, for the LORD had said that he would make Israel as numerous as the stars of heaven. 24Joab son of Zeruiah began to count them but did not finish; and because of this wrath came upon Israel. The number was not entered in the record of the chronicles of King David.

25Over the king’s treasuries was Azmaveth son of Adiel. Over the storehouses in the fields, in the cities, in the villages, and in the towers was Jonathan son of Uzziah. 26Over those who did the work of the field, for cultivating the ground, was Ezri son of Chelub. 27Over the vineyards was Shimei the Ramathite; over what was in the vineyards for the wine storehouses was Zabdi the Shiphmite. 28Over the olive trees and the sycamore trees in the lowland was Baal-hanan the Gederite; over the stores of oil was Joash. 29Over the cattle grazing in Sharon was Shitrai the Sharonite; over the cattle in the valleys was Shaphat son of Adlai. 30Over the camels was Obil the Ishmaelite; over the donkeys was Jehdeiah the Meronothite. 31Over the flocks was Jaziz the Hagrite. All these were overseers of the property that belonged to King David.

32Jonathan, David’s uncle, was a counselor, a man of understanding, and a scribe; Jehiel son of Hacmoni was with the king’s sons. 33Ahithophel was counselor to the king, and Hushai the Archite was the king’s friend. 34After Ahithophel came Jehoiada son of Benaiah and Abiathar; and Joab was commander of the king’s army.
