Seeing the Unseen

Opening Prayer
Holy and ever-present God, in whom we live and move and have our being, open our hearts to your mystery and wonder. Though we grasp at what we can measure and hold, your grace calls us beyond what we comprehend. Steady us in the knowledge that your love surpasses our understanding and does not require our control. As we gather before you, draw our eyes toward your mercy and help us to trust in your unseen hand at work in the world. Lead us in paths of faith and hope, that we may rest in your enduring presence. In the name of the one who reveals your hidden ways, we pray through the Spirit who guides us toward all truth. Amen.
Call to Worship
God calls us to look beyond what our eyes can see.
We gather, seeking to trust in things not yet visible.
In our desire for control and certainty, we hold tightly to what we know.
Yet God invites us to release our grasp and open our hearts.
Grace unfolds in ways we cannot fully measure or predict.
We come, trusting the One who reveals glimpses of the unseen.
Let us worship the God who is beyond our understanding.
We lift our hearts to the One who sees all and loves us still.

Grace Spoken
Even as we search for certainty in the visible and tangible, God beckons us to perceive the grace that transcends our understanding. Beloved of God, remember this: the mercy bestowed upon us is not of our making, but stems from God's boundless love—an embrace of forgiveness that already envelops us. In Christ, we have been reconciled, seen and cherished beyond all measure. Let this grace, woven into the very fabric of creation, free you to trust deeply in the promises yet unseen. Know that you are forgiven, and in that assurance, find peace.
Responding to God's Grace
Generous and unseen God, you open our eyes to your presence in ways we do not expect. We confess that often we cling to what is tangible and within our grasp, trusting only what we can measure and manage. We are reluctant to step into the spaces where sight falls short and only faith can tread. Forgive us, O God, for our reliance on the seen, and our hesitance to trust in your unseen grace. You light a path before us, yet we are slow to follow where it leads. As a community, we benefit from systems that privilege the visible at the expense of the unseen. We acknowledge our complicity, and we turn now toward your mercy, freely given. Guide us in trusting your promise, even when it leads us beyond familiar horizons. Allow us to rest in the assurance of your love, which is steadfast and ever-present, seen and unseen. Grateful for the sight we cannot achieve on our own, we place our hope in the wonders your grace reveals. Amen.

A Psalm of the LORD’s Reign
1The LORD reigns; let the peoples tremble.
He sits enthroned upon the cherubim; let the earth quake.2The LORD is great in Zion;
he is exalted over all the peoples.3Let them praise your great and awesome name.
Holy is he.4The strength of the king loves justice.
You have established equity;
you have executed justice and righteousness in Jacob.5Exalt the LORD our God;
bow down at his footstool.
Holy is he.6Moses and Aaron were among his priests,
Samuel also was among those who called on his name.
They cried to the LORD,
and he answered them.7In the pillar of cloud he spoke to them;
they kept his testimonies,
and the statute that he gave them.8O LORD our God, you answered them;

A Reading from the Hebrew Scriptures
Exodus 33:12-23
The Presence of the LORD
12Moses said to the LORD, “See, you say to me, ‘Bring up this people,’ but you have not made known to me whom you will send with me. Yet you have said, ‘I know you by name, and you have also found favor in my sight.’ 13Now therefore, if I have found favor in your sight, show me now your ways, that I may know you, in order to find favor in your sight. Consider too that this nation is your people.”
14And he said, “My presence will go, and I will give you rest.” 15And he said to him, “If your presence does not go, do not bring us up from here. 16For how shall it be known that I have found favor in your sight, I and your people? Is it not in your going with us, so that we are set apart, I and your people, from all the people who are on the face of the earth?”
17And the LORD said to Moses, “This very thing that you have spoken I will do, for you have found favor in my sight, and I know you by name.” 18Moses said, “Please show me your glory.”
19And he said, “I will cause all my goodness to pass before you and will proclaim the name of the LORD before you. And I will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, and will show compassion to whom I will show compassion. 20But,” he said, “you cannot see my face, for man shall not see me and live.”
21And the LORD said, “Behold, there is a place by me where you shall stand on the rock, 22and while my glory passes by I will put you in a cleft of the rock, and I will cover you with my hand until I have passed by. 23Then I will take away my hand, and you shall see my back, but my face shall not be seen.”
Notes
Moses presses for clarity—mission without presence is insufficient. “Knowing” God is tied to favor and guidance.
“Presence” (literally “face”) becomes the decisive assurance. Rest is the outcome of divine accompaniment.
Moses reframes identity: Israel is defined not by geography but by God’s presence among them.
Divine response affirms relational knowledge—being “known by name” grounds the promise.
The request to see “glory” intensifies the encounter—seeking direct perception of divine reality.
Glory is mediated through goodness and name. Divine freedom (“I will be gracious…”) resists human control.
The boundary is absolute—direct vision of God is incompatible with human life.
Revelation is partial and protected. The imagery of rock, cleft, and covering emphasizes both nearness and concealment.
