Living Faithfully in the Mess (Longer Conversation)

Order, Risk, and the Call to Follow Christ

Shared Word Translation Psalm 13
Open in Bible

Asking for Relief

1How long, O LORD?
Will you forget me forever?
How long will you hide your face from me?
2How long must I carry counsel in my soul,
sorrow in my heart day after day?
How long shall my enemy be lifted up over me?

Plea for Answer and Help

3Look upon me; answer me, O LORD my God.
Give light to my eyes,
so that I do not sleep the sleep of death,
4so that my enemy will not say, “I have prevailed,”
and my foes do not rejoice because I am shaken.

Trust and Praise During Sorrow

5But I have trusted in your steadfast love;
my heart shall rejoice in your saving help.
6I will sing to the LORD,
because the LORD has dealt bountifully with me.

Notes
v01

“How long” — The question is repeated throughout the opening lament. The repetition is preserved as the psalmist addresses divine absence, inner sorrow, and the apparent triumph of an enemy.

v02

“carry counsel in my soul” — The Hebrew describes continually placing or taking counsel within oneself. The expression suggests inward deliberation under distress without specifying whether the counsel is planning, questioning, or anxious reflection.

v03

“Give light to my eyes” — The image contrasts renewed vitality with the “sleep of death” that follows. The metaphor is retained rather than explained in the main text.

v05

“steadfast love” — The Hebrew ḥesed names faithful, enduring love grounded in relationship. The turn toward trust does not erase the lament that precedes it.

v06

“dealt bountifully with me” — The final line speaks of the LORD’s action toward the psalmist as the ground of praise. The Hebrew verb can carry the sense of dealing fully or generously with someone.

Vocabulary
v01

פָּנִים (panim)

“Face” or “presence.” In the expression “hide your face,” the term communicates the felt withdrawal of divine attention or presence.

v02

יָגוֹן (yagon)

“Sorrow” or “grief.” Deep inward distress, here located in the heart.

v03

אוֹר (or)

“Light.” The verbal expression “give light to my eyes” uses light as an image of renewed life and strength.

v05

חֶסֶד (ḥesed)

“Steadfast love.” Faithful and enduring love expressed within relationship and covenant.

v05

יְשׁוּעָה (yeshuah)

“Saving help,” “deliverance,” or “salvation.” Rescue or deliverance brought by God.

v06

גָּמַל (gamal)

“To deal with,” “repay,” or “deal bountifully.” Here the verb describes the LORD’s generous action toward the psalmist.

Our Instincts

When uncertainty or discomfort arises in the church, what do I reach for first?

  • structure?
  • process?
  • a meeting?
  • more information?
  • delay?
  • other?

Where do I feel most faithful:

  • when things are orderly?
  • or when things are unresolved?

What kinds of mess make me most uncomfortable?

  • conflict
  • grief
  • financial risk
  • social or political tension
  • uncertainty about outcomes

Of these questions, which was hardest to answer honestly?

Our Meetings and Our Faithfulness

What do our meetings do well?

What do they protect us from?

When have our processes helped us live out the gospel?

When might they have helped us avoid risk or discomfort?

How often do our meetings talk about ministry, study it, plan for it, but hesitate to send, bless, or commission people for it?

What would change if we measured faithfulness not by how orderly our meetings are, but by how willing we are to be changed individually and as a Christian community?

Staying with the Cross

When Jesus had received the wine, he said, “It is finished.” Then he bowed his head and handed over his spirit.
John 19:30

When we hear “It is finished,” what do we assume is resolved?

What remains unfinished at the cross?

  • injustice
  • grief
  • fear
  • confusion
  • broken relationships
  • other

Between the cross and the resurrection, there is silence, waiting, and uncertainty.

  • Where are we uncomfortable staying in that space?
  • How quickly do we want resolution?
  • What if God’s saving work does not remove us from the mess, but places God within I–and then sounds us back to it?

How often do our meetings talk about ministry, study it, plan for it, but hesitate to send, bless, or commission people for it?

Living the Gospel Together

If we truly trusted that ministry happens within the mess:

  • What might we do less of?
  • What might we risk more readily?
  • Where might we need to loosen our grip on control in order to be faithful?
  • What is one small practice our leadership could try that would help us stay longer with discomfort, resist premature solutions, or create more space for honesty and vulnerability?
