About Church Commons

Resources built for life together.

Church Commons exists to help Christian communities worship, learn, discern, and lead faithfully without having to build every resource from scratch.

People sharing gifts and serving their community along a path between church and neighborhood.

Why we exist

Meaningful ministry. Limited resources.

Churches are called to meaningful ministry, but the resources available to them are not always equal to their responsibilities. Pastors serve multiple congregations. Elders and volunteer leaders carry substantial responsibilities. Smaller churches often have the creativity, commitment, and relationships needed for faithful ministry, but lack the time, staff, or financial resources to develop every tool and program themselves.

Church Commons seeks to make that work more possible. The goal is not simply to produce more activity or make ministry more efficient. It is to help congregations devote more attention to what matters: worship, discipleship, relationships, service, and participation in God's mission.

What we share

Equipping the Church for faithful ministry.

Church Commons brings together theological resources, practical tools, and opportunities for formation that strengthen the everyday life of Christian communities. Its work includes worship planning, biblical engagement, Christian education, leadership development, training, congregational discernment, and shared ministry.

These resources are developed with particular attention to smaller congregations and those who lead them, although many can serve churches and ministry organizations of different sizes.

How we work

Resources that strengthen discernment.

Faithful ministry cannot be reduced to following instructions or implementing programs. Churches must continually listen to their communities, attend to Scripture, examine their assumptions, and discern how God is calling them to respond.

Our resources offer starting points for conversation, practices for shared leadership, and tools that help communities move from reflection toward faithful action. They support local wisdom and responsibility rather than replace them. Not every resource will fit every congregation; adaptation is part of faithful use.

About the work

Created for real communities.

Church Commons is created and curated by Matthew J. Skolnik, a Presbyterian pastor and church leader. Its development grows from work with congregations, pastors, elders, commissioned lay pastors, students, and other leaders.

Unless otherwise credited, original Church Commons resources are developed by Skolnik, often with AI assistance in research, writing, design, and technical development. Human authors and editors remain responsible for theological judgments, accuracy, and final published content.

Ministry context and institutional independence

Serving the church without implying blanket endorsement.

Church Commons is part of the ministry-resourcing work of Rev. Matthew J. Skolnik while serving Muskingum Valley Presbytery and the Presbytery of the Western Reserve. Its resources grow from the needs, questions, and experiences of congregations and leaders in those communities and beyond.

That ministry connection does not mean either presbytery has reviewed, approved, sponsored, or endorsed every article, post, training resource, tool, or Bible translation published here. Unless a resource is explicitly identified as an official action or publication of a governing body, editorial responsibility belongs to its named author or project, not to either presbytery.
