Opening Prayer
God of mystery and revelation, you are ever-present and always at work among us. In your grace, you unveil the wonders of each day and the miracle of your love that surrounds and sustains us. Open our hearts to perceive the whispers of your Spirit, urging us to see beyond our comfort, beyond the familiar, and to welcome the changes you bring. Guide us to discern the hidden truths that you lay before us, that we may respond with courage and faithfulness. Grant us wisdom to embrace your call and the strength to follow your lead. In the unity of your Holy Spirit, we pray together in trust and hope. Amen.
Call to Worship
The heavens declare the wonders of God, and the skies reveal the works of God's hands.
We gather to see what God is showing us.
The wisdom of God whispers gently, inviting us to discern and discover.
We come to listen beneath the noise, to perceive the truth unfolding.
Our eyes sometimes dwell on the seen, overlooking the depth beyond.
We seek the Spirit's help to notice what is hidden in our midst.
The Word speaks to guide our hearts, calling us to new awareness.
We open ourselves to embrace the mystery of grace.
Come, let us worship the God who reveals and renews.
We worship with open hearts and attentive spirits.

Grace Spoken
Beloved in Christ, in the quiet corners and the familiar places, God's grace surrounds us, unearned and freely given. Before we see, before we understand, even before we seek, mercy finds us. The Spirit searches our hearts and invites us to awaken to the truths that might seem concealed, yet are laid plain in love. Trust in this: God's grace is not hidden from you but is a light already breaking through the shadows. In Christ, we are reconciled, and all things are being made new. Embrace this grace, knowing you are held in a covenant of eternal love and mercy. Amen.
Responding to God's Grace
Merciful God, with grace you open our eyes to see the things we often overlook. We confess that we cling to the familiar and resist the subtle changes you offer. Forgive our unwillingness to embrace the new paths you set before us. We acknowledge our part in systems that obscure your justice and mercy to our neighbors and to creation itself. Help us to let go of comfort that does not serve your will and to seek what is hidden in plain sight. As one people, redeemed and renewed, we turn to you, trusting in the grace you have abundantly provided, confident in your love that never fails. Transform our hearts to align with your truth, which transcends our understanding. Lead us with wisdom and courage, that we may walk faithfully as a new creation in Christ.
Sharing the Peace of Christ
In the light of grace already given, let us share peace.
Peace that reveals what we might miss.
In this gathered community, Christ has reconciled us.
Peace that opens our eyes and hearts.
Beyond the known, God whispers new possibilities.
Peace that invites us to see what lies hidden.
With grace as our guide, let us exchange this peace.
Peace be with you.
And also with you.
The Written Word
There are times when we move through our days on autopilot, seeing but not really noticing, hearing but not truly listening. Routines and familiar stories surround us, comforting us with their predictability. Yet, a restlessness lingers, a hint that there is more to perceive beyond what is obvious. We might resist this gentle invitation to look deeper, to feel the weight of what we overlook, fearing the unsettling shift it might bring. But there are moments when something urges us to pause, to consider, and to hear. Let us open ourselves now to the scripture, listening for the movement of God we may have missed.
This is the Word of the Lord.

Hiding in Plain Sight
1. How might God be inviting us to see beyond the surface of our lives and communities, and what might we find if we accept this invitation?
2. In what ways do we cling to familiar patterns that prevent us from perceiving God's presence or call to change? What would it mean to let go of these?
3. How do we discern the gentle whispers of God's invitations amid the noise of daily life? What practices or attitudes might open us to what is hidden in plain sight?
4. What might be at stake for us if we choose to ignore or refuse to recognize the hidden things God reveals? How does this challenge our understanding of stewardship and responsibility?
Hymn of Reflection
Be Thou My Vision, GTG #450
Affirmation of Faith
We believe in God, whose glory is revealed in the heavens, whose law revives the soul, whose wisdom speaks in quiet ways challenging our assumptions and opening our eyes to hidden truths.
We trust in Jesus Christ, who told stories that unsettle and provoke change, who confronts us with truth that is hidden in plain sight, calling us to see beyond the surface and to recognize what we often ignore.
We rely on the Holy Spirit, who whispers to us in the depths of our being, urging us toward transformation, guiding us through fear of the unknown toward a new understanding of grace.
We believe in the church, a community ever reformed and being reformed, learning to listen, to see, and to respond to God’s invitations to change. In hope, we trust that God is patiently leading us, so that we might perceive what is often hidden in front of us and live into the fullness of life offered.
Prayers of the People
God of mystery and revelation, you speak through the world around us, the sky and the sea, the hills and the plains.
Open our eyes to your glory, hidden in plain sight.
We pray for your church universal, called to witness to the truth in love and humility, that we may see your purpose in our shared journey.
Guide us with your wisdom, hidden until revealed.
For the nations and those who govern, that justice and peace may pour down, and righteousness grow among the people.
May they discern your justice, hidden but near.
Creator of earth and sky, we ask your healing for this fragile planet, hold us accountable to be its faithful stewards.
Help us to cherish your creation, often taken for granted.
Sustainer of life, draw near to those who suffer in body, mind, or spirit, that they may find comfort in your presence and strength in community.
Remind us of your presence, subtle yet enduring.
Eternal God, we lift up our neighbors, that we may see you in one another and extend kindness without reserve.
Let us discover your love, sometimes unnoticed.
For this congregation, for our joys and struggles, for the hopes that we share in your name.
Keep our hearts open to your call, hidden yet persistent.
And for all the saints who have gone before us, whose lives bear witness to your grace throughout the ages.
In their faith, may we find courage, often beneath the surface.
We offer these prayers through Christ, in the power of the Spirit.
Amen.
Hymn of Sending
Open My Eyes, That I May See, GTG #451
Sending
Go into the world, attentive to the whispers of God's grace.
With hearts open, we seek the hidden wonders.
Guided by the light of Christ, who invites us beyond the familiar.
We venture forth, eyes attuned to the mysteries before us.
May the Spirit of wisdom stir within you,
That we may recognize God's presence anew.
The blessing of the eternal God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, be with you now and always.
Amen.
Reflections for Later
Sharing God’s Word Together
For Newcomers
When you're new to a community, everything can seem a bit hidden, like a puzzle waiting to be solved. You might sit among us wondering how you fit into this intricate mosaic of people, traditions, and beliefs. Those questions are not just welcome here; they're essential. In fact, they mirror what we read today in Matthew's gospel—a parable that invites us to look closely, to uncover greater truths beneath the surface of familiar stories. This tale, told by Jesus, encourages us to see beyond what we know and to open our hearts to transformation.
Here, we believe that God's grace is not something you have to earn or prove yourself worthy of. It's a gift, always offered first. This grace is a gentle whisper suggesting that perhaps there is more happening in your life and in the world than you might have imagined. It's an invitation to see the divine mystery woven through our daily experiences. Here, we gather not because we have all the answers but because we know the beauty of seeking and discovering together.
As you explore your place among us, consider where in your own life this parable might gently ask you to see in new ways. What might be asking you to look more deeply, perhaps with eyes more open to grace and surprise? What whispers of change, maybe hiding in plain sight, are you being invited to notice?
- As you think about your own life, are there areas where you might feel something is concealed beneath the surface, waiting for you to acknowledge it?
- How might the idea of grace — as an unearned and freely given gift — invite you to consider your own experiences and relationships differently?
- In what ways do you hear whispers of change or invitation to see beyond familiar patterns in your daily life?
For Those Rooted in This Community
In the spaces we know so well, it is easy to settle into routines that comfort us. The familiar hymns, the well-worn pews, the presence of friends — all seem steadfast, like the eternal stars that silently arc across the sky. We draw warmth and security from this enduring constancy. Yet within this stillness, God whispers invitation. The psalmist tells us the heavens declare God’s glory — not with loud proclamation but in a subtle, persistent conversation with creation. What is it that we might be missing, right under our noses, as we cling to the familiarity of our ways and traditions?
The parable in Matthew challenges those deeply rooted in tradition, urging a view beyond the vineyard’s satisfactory yield. We are asked to grapple with the hard truth of the tenants who cannot see beyond their own benefit to fully grasp the owner’s vision. This is a call to awaken from our comfortable blindness that may overlook God’s new workings in our midst. Where have we, long settled, begun to miss the tender shoots of new life because we’re so accustomed to seeing the old vines?
Let us consider the call to uncover God’s gentle urgings and hidden workings before us. How might God be inviting this community to change in ways that stretch but also enrich our understanding of faith together? Are there voices or movements, perhaps once ignored, that now summon us to a deeper sense of purpose and renewal? Here lies a challenge and a promise — that in looking beyond our habits, we may find the holy revelations we did not know to seek.
- Where do you find yourself most comfortable in this congregation's traditions, and what newness might you be overlooking in those places?
- How does the idea of hidden workings challenge or comfort you in your faith journey here?
- In what ways can this community become more attuned to God’s whispered invitations for change and renewal?
For Churches Without a Pastor
In the richness of this season without a pastor, it can be tempting to focus on what seems lacking, but there is also an invitation to see differently. Much like the vineyard given into the care of tenants in the Gospel reading, you are entrusted with this community, quietly growing under God's nurture. Without a singular shepherd guiding every step, there is a shared responsibility that may feel daunting yet is full of potential. It is often in these moments of perceived absence that we are most attuned to the gentle whispers of the Spirit, inviting us to discover grace in the unexpected and leadership in one another.
This time invites you to listen to one another with fresh ears and open hearts, to see beyond the familiar patterns and recognize the presence of God in your midst. Psalm 19 speaks of creation's testimony to God's glory—a reminder that divine communication is often subtle, existing in the ordinary and overlooked. You, too, are capable of experiencing and expressing God's presence in simple, profound ways together. This is a gifted season, not only for recognizing the familiar whispers of God's call in your communal life but also for acknowledging and embracing the new directions in which you all might be led.
Consider the ways you are learning to trust previously hidden gifts in one another. Which aspects of your communal life together surprise you with their vitality? How might God be calling you to understand the role of leadership differently in this shared space? When have you experienced grace emerging from what appeared to be absence or uncertainty?
