Foundations Conversations

When churches face challenges, the first instinct is often to change something: revise a structure, launch a ministry, reorganize a committee, develop a strategy, or create a new plan. Yet the Book of Order begins in a different place. Its opening section, Foundations, reminds us that faithful ministry grows from a clear understanding of God, God’s mission, and the church’s calling.

These conversations are designed to help leaders do that foundational work. They explore the convictions, practices, and habits of mind that shape faithful leadership and healthy ministry. Their purpose is not to produce quick answers, but to cultivate the kind of discernment that allows churches and leaders to respond faithfully to God’s work in the world. Before asking what we should do next, these conversations invite us to consider who we are, whose we are, and where God may already be at work among us.
