Love That Stays

Staying with God at the Table in the Deepening Night

for April 2, 2026

Opening Prayer

A Night of Love and Betrayal

Tonight we gather at the table with Jesus, on the edge of the night—to receive again the love that does not turn away. Please pray with me.

Holy God,

on this night of love and betrayal,

of humility and command,

draw us near to your Son.

Quiet our restless minds.

Steady our anxious hearts.

Help us to remain—

to stay with you

when the night deepens.

Open us to receive the love of Christ,

and form us to live in that same love for one another.

We ask this in the name of Jesus,

who loved his own to the end.

Amen.

An Upper Room Did Our Lord Prepare

Glory to God, Hymn #202

The Written Word

John 13:1–17, 31–35 (TSW)

Narrator:

Now before the Passover festival, Jesus knew that his hour had come to depart from this world and go to the Father. Having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end.

And during supper—when the devil had already put it into the heart of Judas son of Simon Iscariot to betray him—

Jesus, knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that he had come from God and was going to God,

rose from supper, laid aside his outer garments, and took a towel and tied it around himself.

Then he poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples’ feet and to wipe them with the towel that was tied around him.

He came to Simon Peter.

Peter:

Lord, are you going to wash my feet?

Jesus:

What I am doing you do not understand now, but afterward you will understand.

Peter:

You will never wash my feet!

Jesus:

Unless I wash you, you have no share with me.

Peter:

Lord, not my feet only but also my hands and my head!

Jesus:

One who has bathed does not need to wash, except for the feet, but is entirely clean. And you are clean—though not all of you.

Narrator:

For Jesus knew who was going to betray him; for this reason he said, “Not all of you are clean.”

When he had washed their feet and put on his outer garments and returned to the table, he said to them:

Jesus:

Do you know what I have done to you?

You call me Teacher and Lord—and you are right, for that is what I am.

So if I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet.

For I have given you an example, so that you also should do as I have done to you.

Truly, truly, I tell you: a servant is not greater than their master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent them.

If you know these things, blessed are you if you do them.

Narrator:

When Judas had gone out, Jesus said:

Jesus:

Now the Son of Man has been glorified, and God has been glorified in him.

If God has been glorified in him, God will also glorify him in himself, and will glorify him at once.

Little children, I am with you only a little longer. You will look for me; and as I said before, “Where I am going you cannot come,” so now I say to you.

I give you a new commandment: that you love one another.

Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another.

By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.

Silence is kept.

Shared Reflection

Love That Stays

Leader:

Tonight is not a peaceful dinner.

Congregation:

It is a night where everything begins to fracture.

Leader:

Jesus knows what is coming.

Congregation:

Betrayal is already in motion.

Denial is not far behind.

Leader:

The disciples do not understand.

Congregation:

And still—he stays.

Silence is kept.

Leader:

This is not naïve love.

Congregation:

Jesus is not surprised.

He does not turn away.

Leader:

He knows who will betray him.

He knows who will fail him.

Congregation:

He remains.

Leader:

He does not escape the night.

Congregation:

He stays with God within it.

Silence is kept.

Leader:

“Having loved his own… he loved them to the end.”

Congregation:

Love that stays.

Love that kneels.

Love that serves.

Leader:

The one who holds all things

takes a towel.

Congregation:

And washes their feet.

Leader:

He washes all of them.

Congregation:

Even the one who will betray.

Even the one who will deny.

Leader:

No one is outside his love.

Congregation:

At the table, love remains.

Silence is kept.

Leader:

“I give you a new commandment: love one another.”

Congregation:

As I have loved you.

Leader:

This is not easy love.

Congregation:

It is humble.

It is steady.

It is costly.

Leader:

We resist this love.

Congregation:

We resist being served.

We resist being known.

We resist loving when it is hard.

Leader:

But Jesus says:

Congregation:

“Unless I wash you…”

Leader:

We must receive his love.

Congregation:

Before we can remain in it.

Silence is kept.

Leader:

So tonight, we come to the table.

Congregation:

Not to prove ourselves.

Leader:

But to receive the love that stays.

Congregation:

And to remain in that love

as the night deepens.

Silence is kept.

Communion

Meeting Christ on the Way to the Cross

Invitation to the Table

This is the table of Jesus Christ.

Not a table of our making, but a table of his love.

On this night, he gathered with his friends—

knowing the night was deepening,

knowing that betrayal and denial were near—

and still, Jesus stayed.

He stayed at the table.

He stayed in love.

He stayed with them to the end.

Tonight, we are invited into that same love.

Not because we are ready.

Not because we are worthy.

But because Christ has first loved us

and has not turned away.

So come—

not to prove yourself,

but to receive.

Come, and remain in the love that stays.

Great Prayer of Thanksgiving

The Lord be with you.

And also with you.

Lift up your hearts.

We lift them to the Lord.

Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

It is right to give our thanks and praise.

Holy and gracious God,

it is right to give you thanks and praise.

You are the God who stays.

From the beginning, you have not turned away from your people.

In mercy and patience, you have drawn near again and again—

calling, guiding, sustaining, and restoring.

And when the world turned from you,

you did not abandon us.

In Jesus Christ,

you came near in a way we could see and touch and know.

He walked among us,

shared our life,

and revealed your love.

On the night when the shadows gathered,

he did not withdraw.

He took a towel and served.

He sat at the table and loved.

He remained with his friends

even as the night deepened.

And so we praise you,

joining our voices with all who have trusted your love:

Holy, holy, holy Lord,

God of power and might,

heaven and earth are full of your glory.

Hosanna in the highest.

Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord.

Hosanna in the highest.

Holy God,

pour out your Spirit upon us

and upon these gifts of bread and cup.

Make them be for us

the body and blood of Christ,

so that as we receive them,

we may receive again his life, his love, and his presence.

Form us as a people who remain—

who stay with you,

who stay with one another,

who stay in love even when it is costly.

Through Christ, with Christ, in Christ,

in the unity of the Holy Spirit,

all glory and honor are yours, almighty God,

now and forever.

Amen.

Words of Institution

On the night of his arrest,

while he was at table with his disciples,

Jesus took bread,

gave thanks to God,

broke it,

and gave it to them, saying:

“This is my body, given for you.

Do this in remembrance of me.”

In the same way, after supper he took the cup,

saying:

“This cup is the new covenant in my blood,

poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins.

Whenever you drink it,

do this in remembrance of me.”

And so, whenever we eat this bread

and drink this cup,

we remember Christ—

his love that stayed,

his life given for us,

and his presence with us still.

Prayer After Communion

Let us pray.

Holy God,

we thank you for this meal of grace.

In bread and cup,

you have met us again—

not at a distance,

but here, at the table,

with love that does not turn away.

You have fed us with Christ himself.

You have reminded us

that you stay with us

even when the night deepens.

Now send us from this table

not with easy answers,

but with steady hearts.

Teach us to remain—

to stay with you in prayer,

to stay with one another in love,

to stay present in a world that is often quick to turn away.

Hold us,

as we walk into the night ahead.

We pray in the name of Jesus,

who loved to the end.

Amen.

Sending

Dimming of Lights

After communion, the lights are dim.

Silence is kept.
